I was born in Jamaica and migrated to the United States many years later. As I reminisce about growing up in Jamaica and the many return trips and family reunions I had taken over the years, it makes me more appreciative for the place I was born; the uniqueness of our Jamaican history and customs.

Cumyah Blog Name
I chose the name Cumyah.com for my blog because it means “come here”, it has a nice rhythm to it and a message.
I want people to know more about the beauty and culture of Jamaica and to come here to visit.
The name of my blog Cumyah is suppose to be two words, “cum yah”. This is from the Jamaican Patois which means, “Come here“.
Example in patois: “Cum yah gyal a lang time mi nuh seen yuh.
Example in english, “Come here girl it’s a long time I haven’t seen you.
This language is known locally as Patois, Patwa, Patwah and some people may call it Jamaican Creole.
Jamaican Patois has West African influences and developed during the time of slavery in Jamaica, to confuse the slave masters.
It is spoken primarily in Jamaica and among the Jamaican diaspora. It is spoken by the majority of Jamaicans as a native language.
Jamaican’s may slightly loose their accent as they migrated to different countries but the Patois is still in them, if they want to speak it.
